Son of King Thranduil, Legolas is the elven prince of Northern Mirkwood. Mirkwood was once known as Greenwood the Great, a prosperous, beautiful land. However, it was eventually covered in Shadow, and it became known as Mirkwood throughout most of the Third Age. After the war of the One Ring had finally ended, the Shadow was lifted, and it became known as Greenwood once more.
When word spread that Elrond of Rivendell would be holding a council meeting with messengers from all the Middle-Earth inhabitants against Sauron, Legolas was chosen to go and represent the elves. In the original story written by J.R.R. Tolkien, Legolas was one of the of the eight men chosen to go and protect Frodo Baggins as part of the Fellowship of the Ring. In the film, Legolas volunteered to go during the council meeting by standing and saying "and you have my bow" to Frodo.
Legolas is highly skilled in archery. He uses his bow and arrows in battle, and is able hit a target dead on in any situation. Legolas is able to pull an arrow from his quiver, aim, shoot and kill an enemy in the blink of an eye. If for some reason Legolas is unable to or chooses not to use his bow, he is also deadly with a dagger. He is a marvelous warrior, trained like most elves in a fighting style based upon ancient European/Asian martial arts.
As an elf, Legolas is amazingly fast on foot. No mortal could ever catch Legolas if he traveled at full speed. When he runs, and even walks, he does it with grace. He is light, and leaves hardly any trace, and his movements are as steady and graceful as a cat's. He is able to jump and climb with more ease than most, and is able to keep a dead silence while doing so. If he wished to, he could sneak up on a person and they would have absolutely no knowledge of his whereabouts. Legolas has the eyes of a hawk and can pick up on sounds at great distances. He is able to sense when danger is near, or if something just isn't right. He knows when to keep moving and when it is safe to rest. Most could look at Legolas and see him as unstoppable. Another gift, though some may look upon it as a curse, that Legolas is given as an elf, is an immortal life. He does not age in appearance and he will still feel as alive as any teen even after he as past his five-hundredth birthday. He is immune to all diseases. As an elf, Legolas can only die if he is slain or if he suffers from a broken heart. Legolas' age was thought to be near 2,931 when the Fellowship of the Ring was first formed, though no one is really sure.
Elves feel emotions to a much greater degree than humans and are easily affected by them. Elves normally feel best while resting in the calm of a forest. They feel very connected to nature and it's creations. This means Legolas also gets along very well with animals. Most elves are rarely seen outside the shelter of the trees. They build their homes near trees, flowers, rivers, and waterfalls.
The secrecy of the elves eventually caused them to slip into myth and legend. Most elves could already sense it happening around the time of the war for the One Ring. The idea of this, of elves being forgotten, is indeed very sad. However, in a way it may have helped the elves continue to live in peace and distance from the outside world. It was a bittersweet time for elves. Even as other elves may disappear from all knowledge, Legolas still lives on in the records of the War of the One Ring.
As an Elf, Legolas always will have a great love for trees and grass. But, as the passing of the Elves came, Legolas felt it was time to perhaps leave the forest and live along side the Sea. Ever since he first saw the Sea and heard the cry of the gulls, Legolas only wanted to be near it
To the Sea, to the Sea! The white gulls are crying,
The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying.
Grey ship, grey ship, do you hear them calling,
The voices of my people that have gone before me?
I will leave, I will leave the woods that bore me;
For our days are ending and our years failing.
I will pass the wide waters lonely sailing.
Long are the waves on the Last Shore falling,
Sweet are the voices in the Lost Isle calling,
In Eressea, in Elvenhome that no man can discover,
Where the leaves fall not: land of my people for ever!
~ Taken from page 935 in The Return of the King.
Legolas had received a warning from Lady Galadriel about the Sea, speaking of the great change that would come if he ever set eyes on it:
"Legolas Greenleaf long under tree
In joy thou hast lived. Beware of the Sea!
If thou hearest the cry of the gull on the shore,
Thy heart shall then rest in the forest no more."
~ Taken from page 492 in The Two Towers.
After the war of the One Ring came to an end, Legolas, with Gimli the Dwarf at his side, built a grey ship and traveled across the Sea. It was some time before Legolas ever set foot inside a forest again. Most would think he had forgotten the trees altogether. But an Elf can never forget his true home, the place he was born and raised, amongst the trees and mountains. It is said that after many journeys on the Sea, Legolas finally came to the Undying Lands, where many Elves before him traveled to spend the rest of their days.
